I consider myself a capable person but sometimes, I stand in awe of what I can accomplish when I take a risk to try something new, roll up my sleeves and put my mind to getting it done! In this case, what I have accomplished is building, planting, and tending to a successfully thriving, completely organic garden.
Growing a garden is exciting and rewarding work. The first seeds to sprout make you whoop with glee and beam a big toothy grin. As the weeks pass your plants actually start to look like something you would buy at your favorite natural foods store. Then, you cut your first head of lettuce, or bunch or kale and bring it to your kitchen to steam, sauté or mix up in a smoothie and the sense of accomplishment and pride is akin to receiving double gold stars on your 1st grade assignment.
Right now I have Red Leaf Lettuce ripe for cutting (I learned that they will grow back if cut properly), Red Russian Kale ready for morning green smoothies, bunches of Basil waiting to become a delicious pesto, Parsley Cilantro and Oregano to spice up my dishes, Watermelon and Cucumbers spreading their vines, Hot Peppers popping, Beefsteak and Roma tomatoes, green and hanging on their thick hearty stems, and tiny little heads of broccoli rabe.
