Eat, Drink & Detox a Little Each Day

Here we are in the thick of the holiday season…how many parties have you been to?  How many extra cocktails and desserts have you indulged in?  Maybe it’s time for a mini detox – not an all-out detox boot camp but just a few simple health habits you can incorporate into your day to strengthen your immunity, purge toxins and give you a boost.  Try any one or all of these and let me know which you like best…

The basics…
Hot water with lemon first thing in the AM (after brushing and using your tongue scraper of course!) to get those digestive juices flowing and alkalize your system.  Follow it up with a healthy breakfast and then have your AM cup of coffee if you must.

Brush your body & scrape your tongue – using a body brush stimulates your body’s largest organ – your skin!  Slough away dead cells and rev up your lymphatic system with this simple tool before getting in the shower or bath.  Next, remember to use your trust tongue scraper after brushing in the morning to get rid of the toxins that built up on the tongue overnight during restful, restorative sleep.

Add in…

  • Broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage and bok choy (all cruciferous veggies) contain phytonutrients that help your body produce more glutathione.
  • Dandelion greens improve the flow of bile in the liver. (recipe)
  • Celery increases urine output.
  • Cilantro helps to remove heavy metals such as mercury and lead.
  • Green tea will give your metabolism a kick and further aid in the eradication of toxins.

Sweat it out

Try the 7-Minute Workout and work-up a quick sweat or hit the gym for at least 30 minutes doing cardio burst activities mingled with strength training and stretching for a total body workout.  In NYC?  Try Evolve Fitness 30 minute total body workout – right place, right price,  time, no excuses.

Hit the sauna - “Saunas have been used as part of detox protocols in integrative medicine for decades,” says Susan S. Blum, M.D., assistant clinical professor of preventive medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York and author of The Immune System Recovery Plan.

Take a hot bath – hot as you can stand using Epsom salts which contains sulfur to boost glutathione levels (often depleted due to stress, poor diet, etc…), magnesium to help reduce stress and induce restful sleep.  Epsom salts also draw out toxins in the body.  Add baking soda as well to alkalize the body + an essential oil like lavender to alleviate stress or eucalyptus and tea tree to clear sinus passages.

Take a break – Take a breath

Breathing and meditation exercises rid the body of toxins by bringing you back to homeostasis and allowing your bodily systems to do their jobs optimally.  Try the ujjayi breathing technique or guided deep breath meditation.  In just 5-10 minutes you will feel relaxed and energized!

Most important…

Enjoy your holiday season.  Be with the people you love.  Savor every flavor and give more than you get.
