April showers bring May flowers and for many of us we will also experience dreaded hay fever, allergies and an increase in asthma symptoms too. What can you do now to prevent those itchy noses and watery eyes? Here are my 10 tips for preventing allergies and enjoying the essence of spring:
A daily dab of local honey – The bees in your neighborhood carry just the right amount of pollen into your locally procured honey, so your body can begin to build up a tolerance and immunity to the atmospheric allergens in your backyard. Add a small dab to tea or eat it whole and raw each morning starting today!
Nettie Pot – This ancient ayurvedic practice of flushing the sinus’ removes pollen and other irritants, helping you breathe a little easier. The old fashioned nettie pot can be challenging to use so I prefer the NeilMed Sinus Rinse which is available at most local pharmacies.
Probiotics – A healthy gut supports proper immune function and lays a strong foundation for battling allergens. Enjoy fermented foods as a natural way to increase your daily pro-biotic intake. I have a shot of raw, fermented sauerkraut juice or beet kvass on an empty stomach each morning. If fermented foods are not your thing then take a probiotic supplment to maintain your healthy gut, strenghtened immune system and limit those allergy symptoms!
Vitamin D – Maintaining healthy levels of Vitamin D is essential to our overall health. For asthma sufferers in particular, having adequate Vitamin D can make a real difference. 10 – 20 minutes of direct exposure to sunlight each day will help boost your Vitamin D levels but that is not always available to us here in the northeast so I recommend supplementing with the following Designs for Health Vitamin D Supreme (w/K1 & K2) supplement.
Omega 3 – Getting sufficient amounts of high-quality animal-based omega-3 fats in your diet. Is essential to reducing allergy symptoms. My favorite sources of omega-3 fatty acids are grass fed meat and eggs, and the Designs for Health Hi-Po Omega supplement.
Eating Clean – A whole foods diet built upon a foundation of vegetables, fruits, beans and legumes, whole grains, grass fed/pasture raised meats and poultry, wild fish and healthy sources of fat from nut oils and grass fed butter is what you want to strive for each day to reinforce your health and total wellness.
Ditching dairy – Avoid dairy products, especially those that are highly pasteurized as they will add to the buildup of mucus in your system.
Eucalyptus/Tea Tree Oil Vaporizer – Adding a few drops of each of these powerful and healing essential oils to your humidifier will change the air in your bedroom, living room or office and support enhanced respirator function – plus it smells awesome!
Hot Peppers - Hot chili peppers, horseradish, and hot mustards work as natural decongestants.
Move – Get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. Take deep breaths and be grateful for all that Mother Nature has to offer!
